BenchPulse (“BenchPulse,” “we,” “us”) is a hockey stats app for minor and rep teams. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices you have. We keep it short and plain on purpose. If anything is unclear, email us at support@benchpulse.app.
The short version: your team's stats are only visible to people your team invites. We don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and we only collect what we need to run the app.
Information we collect
When you create an account: your first and last name, email address and password. Your password is stored in encrypted (hashed) form, and we can never see it. We also keep basic account records, like when you signed up and last signed in, and your app settings.
When your team uses BenchPulse: team admins enter information about the team and its players, including:
- Team name, settings, seasons, schedules and opponent names
- Player first and last names, jersey numbers, positions and roster status
- Game stats, such as goals, assists, shots and where they were taken on the ice, penalties, plus/minus, goalie changes and who dressed for each game
- Which account recorded each stat, and when
When someone is invited:the email address the team admin enters, plus the inviter's name and the team name, so the invitation makes sense to the person receiving it.
When you use the app: technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, and the pages you visit. We also collect usage information about how the app is used, including recordings of app sessions (see “Analytics and session recordings” below).
What we don't collect: birth dates or ages, photos, phone numbers, home addresses, payment information or precise location. BenchPulse is free, so we never ask for payment details.
How we use information
We use information to:
- Run BenchPulse: create your account, show your team's stats to its members and keep your data in sync across devices
- Send account emails, such as invitations, sign-up confirmations and password resets
- Understand how BenchPulse is used so we can fix problems and make it better
- Keep BenchPulse secure and prevent misuse
- Respond when you contact us
We don't sell or rent personal information, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't send marketing emails. If we ever send product updates by email, you'll be able to unsubscribe at any time.
Who can see your team's information
Your team:only people a team admin invites can see a team's information. Admins can edit the roster, record stats and manage members, including seeing members' names and email addresses. Viewers can see the team's stats but can't change anything. Nobody outside your team can see your team.
BenchPulse:we can access team and account information when needed to run and support the service, fix problems, keep it secure or respond to your requests. We don't browse your team's information for any other reason.
Service providers: we use a small number of trusted companies to run BenchPulse. They can only use your information to provide their service to us:
| Provider | What they do | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database and sign-in | Canada |
| Vercel | Hosts the app and website | United States |
| Resend | Sends account emails | United States |
| PostHog | Usage analytics and session recordings | United States |
When required by law: we may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
Where your information is stored
Your account and team information is stored in a database in Canada. Some information is processed in the United States by the service providers listed above, for example when the app loads or when an email is sent. Information processed outside Canada is subject to the laws of that country, and may be accessible to its authorities.
Analytics and session recordings
We use PostHog to understand how people use BenchPulse, such as which screens are used and where people get stuck. This includes session recordings, which show how someone moved through the app. Recordings are set up to hide the text on screen, including names and stats, and they never capture passwords. Analytics are linked to your account so we can understand how teams use the app. Recordings are kept for a limited time and then deleted.
Cookies and storage on your device
We use a small number of cookies and similar browser storage:
- Sign-in:keeps you signed in. BenchPulse can't work without these.
- Preferences: remembers things like which team to open and how you like your roster sorted.
- Offline tracking:saves stats on your device when the rink wifi drops, until they sync. These entries stay on the device until they sync, even if you sign out, so they aren't lost.
- Analytics: helps PostHog recognize your visits across sessions.
We don't use advertising cookies.
How long we keep information
We keep account and team information while your account or team is active. Items removed in the app, such as a player or a game, may be kept with the team's records until the team is deleted. When you ask us to delete information, we delete it from our active systems within 30 days. Some information may remain in our service providers' logs for a limited time after that.
Deleting your account or team
Email support@benchpulse.app to delete your account or your team.
- Deleting your account removes your name, email and settings. Stats you recorded for a team stay with that team, since they belong to the team, but they are no longer linked to you.
- Deleting a team removes the team and all of its players, games and stats. Only a team admin can ask us to delete a team.
Information about players
Players don't have BenchPulse accounts. Their names and stats are entered by their team's coaches and managers. Team admins are responsible for making sure they have permission to add players to BenchPulse, including from parents or guardians where required.
Parents and guardians can contact us at support@benchpulse.appto ask what information we hold about their child, correct it or ask us to delete it. We may involve the team's admin to confirm the request.
BenchPulse accounts are only for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly allow anyone under 18 to create an account.
How we protect information
Information is encrypted when it travels between your device and BenchPulse, and it is stored encrypted by our database provider. Access to each team's information is restricted to that team's members, and this is enforced by the database itself, not just the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you if a breach puts it at risk, as the law requires.
Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. You can also withdraw your consent to our use of your information, although that may mean you can no longer use BenchPulse. Email support@benchpulse.appand we'll respond within 30 days.
If you're not satisfied with how we handle a privacy concern, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Changes to this policy
If we make important changes to this policy, we'll let you know by email or in the app before they take effect. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
